Starbucks caffeine chart: every drink and size
A grande Pike Place has about 310 mg of caffeine, a grande latte 150 mg and a grande cold brew 205 mg. The brewed coffee is the strongest thing on the menu by a wide margin: a grande drip has twice the caffeine of a grande latte, and a venti Blonde Roast alone goes past the 400 mg a day that the FDA treats as the limit for healthy adults.
The chart below has the popular drinks in all three sizes, with one more column you will not find on the menu: the latest you could order a grande and still fall asleep at 11 pm.

Figures are the ones Starbucks lists for its US menu, for a tall (12 oz), grande (16 oz) and venti. The shaken espresso is the Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso. The Venti column is the hot venti for espresso drinks; iced ventis get an extra shot, so an iced venti latte is about 225 mg. Cold drinks have no Short size and the Nitro Cold Brew stops at grande.
The last column is worked out the same way as the rest of this site: caffeine peaks about 45 minutes after you drink it and then halves roughly every 5.7 hours. The time shown is when one grande on its own would be down to 40 mg by 11 pm, the level we treat as low enough to sleep on. "Before 5 am" means a grande that strong does not get there from any normal morning order.
Brewed coffee is the strong one
People order a latte when they want a lighter drink and a drip coffee when they want a plain one, and assume the two are about the same. They are not. A grande Pike Place has 310 mg, a grande Latte 150 mg. The latte is two shots of espresso topped up with milk; the drip is sixteen ounces of coffee.
The roast works the opposite way to how it tastes. Blonde Roast, the mildest flavour, is the strongest: 360 mg in a grande against 260 mg for the dark roast. The espresso against filter coffee guide explains why a "strong" coffee and a caffeinated one are different things.
Espresso drinks: count the shots
Every espresso drink at Starbucks is a number of shots, and each shot is about 75 mg. Short and tall drinks get one shot, grande and hot venti get two, iced venti gets three. That is why a tall latte, a tall cappuccino and a tall caramel macchiato all land at 75 mg, and the grande versions at 150 mg.
The exceptions are drinks built on extra or stronger shots. A grande Americano has three shots, 225 mg. A grande Flat white uses three ristretto shots, 195 mg. The Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso uses three Blonde shots at about 85 mg each, which makes the grande 255 mg, more than most people expect from a drink that tastes like dessert.
Cold brew, iced coffee and Nitro
A grande Cold brew has about 205 mg, and Nitro Cold Brew about 280 mg in the same size. Classic iced coffee is weaker, 165 mg, because it is hot-brewed coffee poured over ice, and the ice takes up part of the cup.
Cold brew feels gentle because it is less bitter. It is not lower in caffeine, and a venti cold brew at 310 mg is a full Pike Place's worth.
The low-caffeine end of the menu
If you want something in the afternoon, the bottom of the chart is where to look. Refreshers and the Pink Drink have about 45 mg in a grande, from green coffee extract. A matcha latte has 80 mg and a chai latte 95 mg. Earl Grey and London Fog sit at 40 mg whatever the size, because they use one tea bag.
Decaf Pike Place is not zero, about 25 mg a grande, but it is low enough to drink in the evening. Crème Frappuccinos and steamers have no caffeine at all.
How late can you order at Starbucks?
For an 11 pm bedtime, a single grande drip coffee should be ordered before about 6 am, which in practice means a grande drip is a morning-only drink. A grande latte works until about noon, a grande chai until about 3:40 pm and a grande matcha until about 5 pm. A grande Refresher is fine until almost 10 pm.
These times are for one drink on its own. A grande Pike Place at 9 am still leaves about 58 mg at 11 pm, so a latte at lunch on top of it pushes you further over the line. The bedtime calculator adds up every drink of your day, and the when to stop drinking coffee guide explains the rule behind the times.
Starbucks against Dunkin'
Medium for medium, Starbucks coffee is stronger. A grande Pike Place has 310 mg and a medium Dunkin' hot coffee 210 mg. The full Dunkin' menu is in the Dunkin' caffeine chart.
| Drink | Starbucks grande | Dunkin' medium |
|---|---|---|
| Hot brewed coffee | 310 mg | 210 mg |
| Cold brew | 205 mg | 260 mg |
| Iced coffee | 165 mg | 297 mg |
| Latte | 150 mg | 166 mg |
| Americano | 225 mg | 284 mg |
| Chai latte | 95 mg | 80 mg |

Common questions
What has the most caffeine at Starbucks?
Brewed coffee, not espresso. A venti Blonde Roast has about 475 mg, more than the 400 mg daily limit on its own. A grande Blonde Roast has 360 mg and a grande Pike Place 310 mg. The strongest espresso drink on the regular menu, the grande Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso, has 255 mg.
How much caffeine is in a grande latte from Starbucks?
About 150 mg. A grande latte, cappuccino or caramel macchiato is built on two shots of espresso at roughly 75 mg each. A hot venti latte also has two shots, so it is still 150 mg. An iced venti gets a third shot and comes to about 225 mg.
Does Blonde Roast have more caffeine than Pike Place?
Yes. A grande Blonde Roast has about 360 mg against 310 mg for Pike Place and 260 mg for the dark roast. Measured by the scoop, a lighter roast carries a little more caffeine, so the mildest-tasting coffee is the strongest one.
How much caffeine is in a Starbucks cold brew?
About 205 mg in a grande and 310 mg in a venti. Nitro Cold Brew is stronger, at about 280 mg in a grande. Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew has a little less than plain cold brew, about 185 mg, because the cream takes up part of the cup.
Which Starbucks drinks are low in caffeine?
Refreshers and the Pink Drink have about 45 mg in a grande, Earl Grey and London Fog about 40 mg in any size, and a grande hot chocolate about 25 mg. Decaf Pike Place has around 25 mg. Crème Frappuccinos such as Vanilla Bean have none.
